36 hours in New York City - The First 18

36 hours in New York City - The First 18

Our son Graeme invited us to go to New York with he and Kendra to celebrate our first born Grandchild. He had lots of miles and volunteered them for our flight from Austin to NYC. So we immediately booked flights to Austin with a couple of extra days on the front and back end in Austin.

Texas was an independent republic and Texans have never forgot that, whenver the word seems crazy to Texans they start appealing for succession from the Union.

"We the People" are not the same in 2019 but you have to know that Texans are well armed so if they ever wanted to take it back they already have a hand up.

The Archives are more important to the people of Texas than the State Capital, they would burn down the Capital if they had to but they would defend this building like it was the Alamo.

A case in  point.

Sam Houston won the Battle and was the First President of the Republic.

There is a commanding mural as soon as you walk in the front door of the Archives. On the left os Stephen F. Austin, The Father of Texas.

Sam Houston is in the Center with the heroes of the Alamo William Travis to Sam's left and David Crockett, and Jim bowie. I'm sure you can pick out David Crockett the namesake of the Austin High School I taught in for so many years.

Then left to right is Mirabeau Lamar the second President of the Republic, and Anson Jones the Last President of the Republic.

We took a sunset walk , the raccoons made their mark in the wet concrete, along the sidewalk along the East edge of the Texas Hill Country bluff.

We went to bed early to take a 4am Uber to the airport.

Graeme had a itinerary all prepared for us, Ella made a couple of modifications on the fly.

West Village, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, East Village and Alphabet city are Ella's pathways

All checked in, lets go eat!

The Steakley Family traveled to NYC in 1989 to visit brother Dave who had been in the city for about a year working for the NY Shakespearean Theater and we had a fine family dinner at La Mela

So we knew exactly where to get a late lunch!

You HAVE to eat it all!

Lynn's late Aunt Roseann gave her a Lafayette 148  jacket that she like to wear when in New York, we just happened to walk by.

If you have to ask How Much? do not walk in.

We visited the high end consignment shop where Ella had a summer job.

There was a cool coffee shop and courtyard attached.
We could afford the coffe but not the socks.

Dante's has the Best Bar in NYC designation so we stopped in for some energy.

A espresso for Graeme and I and a Tea for the Admiral gave us the recharge to make to the night.

We met Ella at her school, Parsons, School of Design at The New School.

Then we walked to Alphabet City to check out her digs.

Crazy Proud of our firstborn Rockin' NYC

A great place to be together!

Next morning was a vegan brunch at The Butcher's Daughter

NYC is very different from 1989, very clean and no fear on the streets.

This city  represents so much of America
