Light Speed in Seattle - August

Light Speed in Seattle - August

Not Sure where August and September went but I'm thinking light speed had something to do with it. Or perhaps it was due to our almost 5 yr old grandson starting pre-school class. But wait that is supposed to free up time, so it must be his almost two yr old red-headed sister, she definitely adds some to our daily lives.
I will never forget the day I picked Big D up from preschool class on his second day of class. He told me he had a "Rough Day in Pre-K" That will definitely put some perspective in your life. But the next time I picked him up from Pre-K he darted out in his robot gear all excited about his day

Boating was more about small boat projects than sailing in August, We did take a day sail over to Kingston and spend several hours n this small charming community on the east coast of the Olympic Peninsula. You can pay just $10 at the Port of Kingston and have four hours to roam around.

Smokey sunsets became the rule as Canadian smoke and other locations blew into the Sound.

A day at Jimi Hendrix Park and the Northwest African American Museum.

Living in the shadow of Jimi

Benches with guitar frets

Butterflies were not present this August Day but the spirit was there for sure.

A new exhibit is being built inside the fence, we will be back to see it.

At Horace Mann Elementary School in Seattle during the mid-1950s, Hendrix's habit of carrying a broom with him to emulate a guitar gained the attention of the school's social worker. After more than a year of his clinging to a broom like a security blanket, she wrote a letter requesting school funding intended for underprivileged children, insisting that leaving him without a guitar might result in psychological damage.[29] Her efforts failed, and Al refused to buy him a guitar.[29][nb 5]
In 1957, while helping his father with a side-job, Hendrix found a ukulele amongst the garbage they were removing from an older woman's home. She told him that he could keep the instrument, which had only one string.[31] Learning by ear, he played single notes, following along to Elvis Presley songs, particularly "Hound Dog".[32][nb 6] By the age of thirty-three, Hendrix's mother Lucille had developed cirrhosis of the liver, and on February 2, 1958, she died when her spleen ruptured.[34] Al refused to take James and Leon to attend their mother's funeral; he instead gave them shots of whiskey and instructed them that was how men should deal with loss.[34][nb 7] In 1958, Hendrix completed his studies at Washington Junior High School and began attending, but did not graduate from, Garfield High School.[35][nb 8]
In mid-1958, at age 15, Hendrix acquired his first acoustic guitar, for $5[38] (equivalent to $43.40 in 2018).[39] He played for hours daily, watching others and learning from more experienced guitarists, and listening to blues artists such as Muddy WatersB.B. KingHowlin' Wolf, and Robert Johnson.[40] The first tune Hendrix learned to play was the television theme "Peter Gunn".[41]Around that time, Hendrix jammed with boyhood friend Sammy Drain and his keyboard-playing brother.[42] In 1959, attending a concert by Hank Ballard & the Midnighters in Seattle, Hendrix met the group's guitarist Billy Davis.[43] Davis showed him some guitar licks and later got him a short gig with the Midnighters.[44] The two remained friends until Hendrix's death in 1970.[45]
Soon after he acquired the acoustic guitar, Hendrix formed his first band, the Velvetones. Without an electric guitar, he could barely be heard over the sound of the group. After about three months, he realized that he needed an electric guitar.[46] In mid-1959, his father relented and bought him a white Supro Ozark.[46] Hendrix's first gig was with an unnamed band in the Jaffe Room of Seattle's Temple De Hirsch Sinai, but they fired him between sets for showing off.[47] He joined the Rocking Kings, which played professionally at venues such as the Birdland club. When his guitar was stolen after he left it backstage overnight, Al bought him a red Silvertone Danelectro.[48]

We heard about his signature somewhere in the exhibit but had to walk to the far corner to find it. Jimi remains my all time favorite musician. I got to see him in 1970 at Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth, TX when I was almost 19 years old. We had been to a few concerts up to that time both in Dallas and Fort worth but Jimi blew everyone's mind and changed a generation at light speed.

Just across the street 12 homes replace two, this is occurring all over the Seattle area.

Found a picnic table for our lunch.

The Northwest African American museum is in this old high school building among a few other community service projects.

The Black Panther Party (BPP), originally the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, was a political organization founded by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton in October 1966.[1][2] The party was active in the United States from 1966 until 1982, with international chapters operating in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s,[3] and in Algeria from 1969 until 1972.[4]
At its inception on October 15, 1966,[5] the Black Panther Party's core practice was its armed citizens' patrols to monitor the behavior of officers of the Oakland Police Department and challenge police brutality in Oakland, California. In 1969, community social programs became a core activity of party members.[6] The Black Panther Party instituted a variety of community social programs, most extensively the Free Breakfast for ChildrenPrograms, and community health clinics to address issues like food injustice.[7][8][9] The party enrolled the largest number of members and made the greatest impact in the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Area, New YorkChicagoLos AngelesSeattle, and Philadelphia.[10] from wikipedia

I was to young and to far away to understand what the Black Panthers were all about and this was enlightening for sure. Our nation needed this then and we need the Black Lives Matter movement now.
