June 2024 Seattle to Princeton, NJ

June 2024 Seattle to Princeton, NJ

We had a few remaining days in Seattle, we managed to get a sail in on Shilshole Bay

Winds were light but we managed 4-5 knots on just the genoa.

After the sail we tried to go find the Bard owls at Discovery Park that our son-in-law and grandson love to visit often. We found the location by coordinates but either we showed up to late or they were to hard for our eyes to find

They might be up there.

After hunting for owls we thought we might catch the last part of the days sunset at Sunset Hill Park,

When we go for a walk South along the docks we get to see all the interesting vessels moored at Shilshole.

School is ending this week for the grandkids. And this particular species of Magnolia is blooming.

Dracunculus canariensis can be found solely in the Canary Islands: But we found this one at the Meridain schools garden. see:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracunculus_canariensis

The 2024 Race to Alaska was lots of fun to follow this year

The multi hulls are killing it, there was even two Hobie 16's in the race!

This old anchor has been at Shilshole forever but I just recently stopped to check it out.

Princeton, New Jersey
WE
all arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport, found our way through the maze to the rental cars and then after a short wait we fortunately got a car. We first found a place to eat and then drove a little over an hour South to Princeton, New Jersey.

Our daughter found this Old farm house air B&B. The farm was established in 1720 but the house we stayed in was built in 1850.

The house has been restored, sort of. It does have new plumbing and electric.

A huge barn, I walked inside and it is much bigger than this picture appears.

That's the corn crib, now used as a garage and it has a interesting air B&B for rent on the second level.

The kitchen has been updated
Dining room
Huge living room
Grandkids enjoyed creating tunes, Big D adapted to the keyboard quickly and played every one of the tunes he learned on his Clarinet in school band class.
Comfy

The stairs are steep and narrow

A spiral staircase to the kitchen.

Princeton University

The Admiral and I spent several days visiting the Princeton University Campus. Anytime we are in a college town we make sure to visit the campus, but this one is oozing with History.

We entered the campus through a random gate only to find out that they encourage students to pass through this particular gate only twice; once when first coming to Princeton and once after they graduate. Violating this principle could result in never graduating!

Nassau Hall, colloquially known as Old Nassau, is the oldest building at Princeton University in Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States.[4] In 1783 it served as the United States Capitol building for four months. At the time it was built in 1756, Nassau Hall was the largest building in colonial New Jersey and the largest academic building in the American colonies.[5]
The Princeton Tigers, are known to have invented the college football game. They convinced Rutgers to start a football program so that they would have an opponent. The Prinecton vs Rutgers game was the first college football game

Nassau Hall has class emblems around the entire building, when they ran out of space they put the class emblems along the sidewalks in front of the building.

When I saw this building it immediately reminded me of Hogwarts in Harry Potter.
East Pyne Hall Built in the late 1800s by architect William Appleton Potter served generations of Princeton students. The connecting structures made up the University Library until Firestone Library was built in 1948. East Pyne houses many language and humanities department offices and classrooms, and includes a courtyard and many sculptural details on its brownstone exterior.

You go through the entry way to a huge court yard where you could imagine playing Harry Potter type games.

John Witherspoon 1723-1794 is in the center of the courtyard.

The Princeton University Chapel is the religious and ceremonial center for Princeton University. Completed in 1928, the University formally opens and closes the academic year with an interfaith service in the chapel and it is the site of special services of music and thanksgiving and concerts throughout the academic year. This beautiful and sacred place is an oasis in the middle of campus and people of all faiths are welcome for prayer and meditation each day from 7am to 11pm.

If this is the chapel I want to see the church!

While we were there some one was practicing their organ music, see: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_e3lwGd7jO4

So many monuments at Princeton, I need a monument Map/guide, while we were in this court yard besides the Chapel we heard some birds very loudly squaking and echoing throughout the campus. I used my Merlin Bird app to identify the bird sounds, It was two Common Ravens carrying on, fit perfect with the Hogwarts building that was just adjacent to the Chapel.

Jacques Lipchitz fused the harp with the harpist to form a powerful hybrid. Inspired by symphony concerts in Paris, the work embodies the Cubist principles of structure and form for which the sculptor was well known. Seventh of an edition of seven, Princeton's version is unique in that it adds a square base to the pedestal, an element not found in earlier casts.

The Joseph Henry House is a historic building. Joseph Henry, a prominent American physicist who worked in electromagnetics, designed the house in 1836 and lived there from its completion in 1838 until taking a position as the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in 1848.[3][4] The construction of the house was offered to the young physicist as part of the University's attempt to hire him away from the Albany Academy in an attempt to raise Princeton's profile

This is another reason I need a monument guide

Frist Campus Center is a focal point of social life at Princeton University. The campus center is a combination of the former Palmer Physics Lab, and a modern addition completed in 2001. It was endowed with money from the fortune the Frist family has made in the private hospital business.

Designed by Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates, the firm of acclaimed architects Robert Venturi (a Princeton alumnus) and Denise Scott Brown, the building consists of a modern expansion to the existing Collegiate Gothic Palmer Hall.

The Admiral has a picture of her Grandfather here at Palmer Hall where he was undergoing Pilot training during WWI.

The Princeton School of Public and International Affairs (formerly the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs) is a professional public policy school at Princeton University. The school provides an array of comprehensive coursework in the fields of international developmentforeign policyscience and technology, and economics and finance through its undergraduate (AB) degrees, graduate Master of Public Affairs (MPA), Master of Public Policy (MPP), and PhD degrees.

The school is consistently ranked as one of the best institutions for the study of international relations and public affairs in the country and world.[1]

Read this to find out why they removed Woodrow Wilsons name from the building!

The Drag at Princeton, Nassau Street
